Periani Saperavi Qvevri

Periani Saperavi Qvevri is a dry red wine made from 100% Saperavi using the traditional Kakhetian method, fermented and aged in qvevri – the clay vessels at the heart of Georgia’s 8,000-year winemaking heritage. It comes from Periani, a family winery founded in 2003 in the village of Vejini, in the Alazani Valley of Kakheti.

The grapes grow in Periani’s own vineyard, planted in 2003 on the north-eastern slope of the Tsiv-Gombori ridge, on the left bank of the Alazani river, and farmed with organic methods. They are hand-harvested in September and processed in the winery’s cellar in the middle of the vineyard. The crushed grapes are fermented in qvevri with their skins and stems, then sealed in the qvevri for six to seven months, giving the wine its depth, structure and characteristic qvevri complexity. It is bottled in French glass under Portuguese cork and sealed with wax.

Tasting notes

Intense dark garnet in colour, with a powerful varietal bouquet of ripe dark fruit. The palate is rich and generous, combining energy and freshness with the firm, textured structure of qvevri-made Saperavi, and finishes with ripe, juicy fruit and a mineral edge.

Food pairing and serving

Serve at 16–18°C; decanting for 30 minutes helps it open up. Excellent with roast and grilled meats, lamb, game and aged cheeses.
