One of Georgia's rarest red grapes, revived by a royal estate: raspberry, pomegranate and a peppery kick

Château Mukhrani Shavkapito is a dry red wine made from Shavkapito, one of Georgia’s oldest and rarest indigenous red grapes, native to the Kartli region. It is produced by Château Mukhrani, the historic royal estate in the Mukhrani valley founded in 1878 by Prince Ivane Mukhranbatoni, who was among the first to bring European winemaking techniques to Georgian grape varieties.
Rarely seen outside Georgia, Shavkapito is valued for subtle, elegant reds with a distinctive style and fine balance. Grown on the estate’s Kartli vineyards, it makes a medium-bodied red that favours finesse over power – a great choice if you enjoy Pinot Noir, Gamay or lighter Syrah.
Tasting notes
Purple-red in the glass, with an expressive nose of ripe raspberry and pomegranate, a light smoky touch of oak and charcoal, and delicate cinnamon spice. The palate is soft and smooth, with sour cherry, pomegranate and a distinctive peppery lift. Fresh, balanced acidity carries a long finish with well-integrated oak.
Food pairing and serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Pairs well with roast lamb, grilled pork, duck, mushroom dishes and Georgian classics such as mtsvadi (grilled skewers) and lobio.
